Established in Cape Town 2010 by coaches Grant Mackenzie and Paul Martin.
The Water Polo Academy specializes in small group training, which focuses on developing athlete’s individual skills, strength and basic understanding of the game. Training is offered all year round, with emphasis being placed on different aspects of the game depending on the season.
Term 1 and 4 training is all about developing understanding the game. The sessions comprise primarily of game time and various scenarios are looked at each week.
Term 2 is generally a skills based season. After coming off a long school polo term, we focus on basic ball handling, passing and shooting drills. This is considered an “off season” and the more time spent with a ball in hand the better.
Term 3 is taken as the lead up to the new school and provincial season. Here the Academy conducts various water polo assessments – including swimming with and without the ball, treading with and with out the ball, vertical and horizontal leg strength as well as passing and shooting assessments. These results are used as the base for each individual player to measure themselves on moving forward. The assessment is redone towards the end of term in order to establish the progression made by the individuals.
Although the sessions are all based on group training, it is up to each individual player to make the most of the extra time spent in the water at The Water Polo Academy. Private as well as small group (2-6 players) are available as well as position specific training at an additional cost.
